Port Guide: Costa Maya Mahahual, Mexico

costa maya carnival cruise port

One of the most popular things to do at the Costa Maya cruise port, is to watch a performance by Paplanta Flyers. The Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers) is a traditional and artistic Mexican flying performance on that takes place on a very high pole within the central square of the cruise port. However, English is widely spoken by tour guide, shopkeepers and restaurant workers at the cruise port and surrounding tourist areas. Costa Maya cruise port was severely damage by Hurricane Dean in 2007 and took several years to recover. We visited recently while on a Virgin Voyages cruise, and could see that the area has much improved. Port Costa Maya (locode MXCOM) is also the closest tourist destination to the lesser-known Mayan ruins in Mexico's Yucatan state (including Kohunlich and Chacchoben).

Restaurants at Costa Maya Cruise Port

Jaime’s at the Blue ReefThis isn’t a restaurant in the traditional sense. Sitting right on the beach, for $57 per adult you get all you can eat and drink, as well as beach chairs, palapas, and snorkel equipment. The menu is heavy on seafood, but there is something for everyone. As the place only takes in 35 people, you’ll want to book ahead of time via the website.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins

What was once a sleepy fishing town (and in many ways still is), now sees some of the biggest ships in the world, sailing to the port from everywhere from Galveston to Miami. You can take a $8 taxi ride (that’s per taxi for one or more people) to anywhere in Mahahual. Here’s how to do exactly that, save a bundle of cash and have one of the best port days ever. Situated along the turquoise-colored Caribbean Sea, Puerto Costa Maya (Costa Maya cruise port) and its nearby towns rest between the sea and the deep jungle.

As with any unfamiliar place, exercising caution and being aware of your surroundings is always good advice. The lagoon is home to several cenotes—natural, water-filled sinkholes. At Cenote Azul, you can relax on the surrounding wooden swings and take Insta-worthy photos. It’s important to note that, due to the distance and range of activities on offer, a visit to the Bacalar Lagoon means you won’t have time to explore Mahahual near the cruise port. Besides swimming with marine mammals, the attraction features shows that entertain visitors with dolphin acrobatics and aerial performances. Most visitors who interact with the dolphins say it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, never to be missed.

During our recent cruise to Costa Maya on Virgin Valiant Lady, we decided to do a day trip to Chacchobeen Mayan Ruins. We’ve been to Costa Maya cruise port on past cruises and wanted to explore this region beyond the man made cruise terminal. If you go to Mahahual or one of the other local beaches, you can participate in several water sports and activities.

Fuerte San Felipe, Bacalar

Delve into ancient history, swim with abundant marine life and stroll across white sandy beaches during your cruise to Costa Maya. This Mexican city welcomes you with a relaxed vibe, authentic flavors, vivid colors and a host of adventures sure to get the blood pumping. The small all-inclusive day resort is located about five miles south of the cruise port.

Maya Chan Beach Resort

Dzibanche is said to be the first capital of the Kaan Dynasty, also known as the Snake Dynasty and the center of social and economic activities for the local population. Within the same archeological zone, in the heart of the jungle, you can also visit Kinichná ruins located approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) from Dzibanche. The complex is dominated by a huge two-level pyramid that you can climb and admire the spectacular views of the lush rainforest and surrounding pyramids. There are usually no crowds as the place is off the beaten track. There are several ways to get to Chacchoben ruins, including renting a car, taking a taxi, or booking a guided tour. Chacchoben ruins are probably one of the few accessible Mayan ruins in Mexico.

Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico’s newest port, was expressly built to welcome cruise vacation guests to explore its pristine beaches, legendary Mayan ruins, and lush sub-tropical landscapes. An excursion to Bacalar offers exciting insights into the real pirates of the Caribbean. Built to protect the citizens from pirate raids, the Bacalar Fortress boasts views across the sparkling water and you can still see imposing cannons on its ramparts. Close by is the Seven Colors Lagoon, reflecting incredible shades of blue.

Also, the famous Bacalar Lagoon is an hour’s drive from the cruise port. The following map of Costa Maya cruise port shows all facilities in the terminal area. Costa Maya cruise port features a modern shopping mall, central plaza and saltwater pools.

There are also several shops selling discount-priced brand jewelry, beachwear, Mexican silver and handicrafts, hand-made souvenirs. Costa Maya counts with many experiences offered via Port Pass - an access pass to all in-port activities. One of the Port's newest additions is the Rockpool where tourists can relax, swim, drink and enjoy the view of the docked ships.

This amazing sight can be reached by boat, taking approximately 25 minutes from the Costa Maya port. Here you can snorkel, swim, and explore the different colors of the lagoon. No visit to Costa Maya is complete without immersing yourself in the ancient roots and traditions of their Mayan culture, which lives on today. While the Nacional Beach Club and Bungalows is a private resort, a day pass will grant you access to their exclusive beach, outstanding hospitality, and delicious culinary fare. Segways are a fun, novel way to see the sights of the Costa Maya.

Many cruise passengers decide to hang out around the free saltwater swimming pool in the centre of the Costa Maya cruise port, followed by a bit of souvenir shopping. Mahahual village is very safe and the beach is ideal for families and people of all ages. Along the beach, you will encounter local restaurants, bars, and beach clubs offering beach chairs, umbrellas, watersports, and fantastic service.

The Maya Chan beach club is located approximately 4 miles away from the Costa Maya cruise port. Maya Chan Beach is popular with cruise passengers visiting Costa Maya for the day. You can book Maya Chan Beach as a shore excursion with the cruise line or opt to go on your own.

costa maya carnival cruise port

The best ATV shore excursions include fajitas or tacos, Mexican beers or non-alcoholic cold drinks, and time at the Costa Maya beach. The best thing is that the start-off point and return destination are only a five-minute taxi ride from the cruise port. The Maya Chan Beach Resort is a hidden gem 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Costa Maya.

Whether you’re interested in history, adventure, relaxation, or experiencing Mexican culture, Costa Maya has something to offer everyone. The best way to visit the Bacalar Lagoon is to book a shore excursion beforehand. The stunning inland freshwater lagoon is famous for its crystal-clear waters, which showcase seven shades of blue. You can go swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding, which provides one of the most peaceful and tranquil ways to immerse yourself in the lagoon’s beauty. The Caribbean coast of Mexico is renowned for its exceptional diving and snorkeling opportunities, largely due to the stunning beauty of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This reef is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world and a haven for a diverse array of marine life.

There is a pool at the Costa Maya terminal, but you’ll have to purchase food and drinks to use it. If you do not plan to explore outside of it, you’re probably better off exploring the terminal and returning to the ship to swim. Mahahual offers beautiful and fun sights like the bustling Malecon—perfect for a quick but memorable excursion. Being your own tour guide means stopping whenever and wherever you want, diving into the local scene at your own pace. ATV tours can be booked from local vendors near the cruise port and offer an exciting way to explore Costa Maya.

Top 23 Music Festival Cruises To Experience Before You Die 2024

rave cruise

Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, The Bahamas, Aruba, and more. From weekend getaway cruises and last minute affordable cruises, to longer sailings that let you linger in the Caribbean for over a week, there’s truly nothing like a cruise from Florida. Read on to learn more about some of the destinations you can visit on your next tropical escape. While it's not only an EDM Festival, Life Is Beautiful is one of the most unique and special festivals on the summer festival season lineup. With a diverse range of headliners playing the festival and the Downtown Las Vegas location, the overall vibe of Life Is Beautiful goes unmatched.

Want to know what everyone in the music business is talking about?

The lineup is always killer, but that shouldn't be the only reason you visit Gov Ball—especially since it has great vibes. I’m always looking for the next big music cruises, so feel free to let me know so I can update this article! While music festival cruises do tend to be a bit more expensive than the average festival experience, I personally think they are worth every penny. Miami's III Points Festival is one of the best house and techno festivals of the year. With tons of events and industry networking opportunities, this one is a must-go if you dream of working in the electronic music scene one day.

ShipRocked Cruise Festival

Early rumors are that the 2021 event will also be at a resort rather than at sea. It seems everyone had as wild a night as the fans because Holy Ship is running about an hour behind. We find our friends, still sans slumber, staggering in the sand. Half Moon Cay is the original Holy Ship private island destination, and though subsequent voyages have visited other Bahamian destinations, this is the party's first time back. The DJs set up in a giant pirate ship -- the only stage on the island.

Friendship

Noise Pop was created in 1993 to celebrate independent music and culture throughout the San Francisco Bay Area—so it's older than most ravers out there! Check out the lineup below and get tickets to Noise Pop here. House and Techno lovers will not want to miss this festival when it kicks off this February at the Expo Park in LA. With more and more festival options in the winter months, this one will be more than enough to tide you over until the summer fests start up later this year. Check out the killer lineup below and get tickets to Skyline Festival here.

Survival Guide: Navigating Groove Cruise 2024 Like a Pro

The party will happen on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Joy, which, according to the cruise company, can host roughly 3,800 guests. The ship will offer eight separate stages and music venues, along with a go-kart track, a waterpark and laser tag. The four-night bacchanal will embark from Miami and dock at both Nassau in the Bahamas and the country’s Great Stirrup Cay, a regular destination for such music-focused party cruises.

For the best views, head to Point Udall (also the easternmost point in the United States) and follow the path up to the summit. For a taste of local history, stop by the centuries-old Fort Christiansvaern in Christiansted — it’s the best-preserved Danish fort in all the Virgin Islands. Foodies will find plenty to get excited about in St. Croix, where Dutch, French, Thai, and West Indian flavors come together to create a vibrant culinary scene. And you definitely can’t leave without a stop at either the Captain Morgan or Cruzan Rum distilleries. Experts here will teach you all about the history of the Caribbean’s favorite spirit before letting you sample the goods. If St. Croix sounds like the perfect island escape for you, you’re in luck — you can reach it on lots of Florida cruises sailing from Miami, one of the top Florida cruise ports.

If you just want to hit the beach, you’re in the right place — St. Thomas is home to some of the most picturesque stretches of coastline in the tropics. Head to Sapphire Beach for the best snorkeling, or opt for romantic Magen’s Bay if you’re looking for rest and relaxation. In addition to seeing your favorite DJs perform, the cruise puts on a series of events –from yoga to a poker tournament- that create all the more opportunities for you to interact with your favorite artists off stage, too.

Groove Cruise Solidifies Spot as Premiere Rave Charter Ahead of 20th Anniversary

All around us are strange beings in inflatable suits and pizza onesies. These goofy-glasses-wearing, one-liner-repeating, theme-dressing wackamoles call themselves #ShipFam. Once you're on the ship, you're #ShipFam too, and you just earned yourself access to an international network of friends who stay in touch on social media and do each other favors (seriously). They're the most fiercely loyal fan base in all of dance music.

This meal isn't included in our price package, so once again, we're handing over the key card -- but it's worth it. We pass a table where Craze, A-Trak and other notable DJs sit, also enjoying a normal moment. We sit by a window looking out on an open deck, and outside, wild and crazy Shippers run around in theme-ready prom attire and dazed expressions.

To hug the new friends I’d made and bottle up the indescribable experience I had. Without a shadow of a doubt in my mind I am a part of the GC Fam for life, and cannot wait to be back. There was something for everyone, every moment of the day and night. With no enforced bedtime and soft-serve ice cream at your beck and call for 96 hours straight, we went through some downright inner child healing while onboard. Groove Cruise 2024 is shaping up to be an event for the ages.

STEPPING OFF THE GANGWAY and into the main atrium of the Carnival Inspiration, and the “Groove Cruise” resembles every other cruise I’ve ever been on. Sacred Acre isn't just a festival, it's a celebration of all that is sacred in Alaska. The event doubles as a fundraiser and awareness event for banning trawling, a type of fishing that uses large nets and is detrimental to the ocean ecosystem. Get tickets here and get ready for the lineup when it drops later this year.

Stepping into this wild and wonderful world of mischief makers and wildcards grants unprecedented access to a global network of warmhearted party-starters. Making no distinction between veteran or virgin, fan or artist, Shipfam unites to break down social boundaries and bring the ultimate feel-good vibe to the sunny shores of Mexico. Those looking for R&R can spend the day being pampered at the Spa and Salon or kicking back in their own private hot tub and balcony before getting back out on the dancefloor. Beachscapes meet city scenes in South Florida, along with some of Royal Caribbean’s biggest and boldest ships. Set sail on your next Caribbean adventure, or dive into the Bahamas and Perfect Day at Cococay.

We make Rick Ross "Shout out to all the pear!" jokes at passersby and hand them fruit. Pick up beachwear at The Gallery at Beach Place, or find rare books and handmade hats on Hollywood Boulevard. Dania’s Antique Row is home to some 100 dealers, while art galleries and unusual boutiques line Las Olas Boulevard. For serious bargains, head to the Sawgrass Mills outlet sprawl. These cruises are selling out fast, get them while you can.

The next voyage is taking off in May in Venice heading to Koper, Zadar and back to Venice. Wincing through a legendary hangover at breakfast the following morning, I’m greeted with a fist-bump from a 20-something year old woman I have no recollection of meeting the night before. Jenna (or was it Gemma?) struggles her way through a piece of toast as she recounts having caught the “sunrise set” that ended just an hour earlier — but we’re docked at Catalina Island and now the party continues ashore. Sometimes all I think about is seeing Lane 8 in Southern California during spring break. Sometimes, that wish can come true as it will at CRSSD Spring 2023. Grab tickets here and check out our guide on what to wear and everything you need to know about CRSSD.

200 People Stranded After Luxury Cruise Ran Aground in Greenland

cruise ships stuck

(WSVN) - A group of migrants were saved out at sea when a cruise ship spotted them in the Gulf of Mexico. "The entire DHS team is working together to ensure no seafarer will be left untreated during this emergency to the best of our collective ability," Rear Adm. Eric Jones, Commander of the 7th District headquartered in Miami, said. However, "cruise lines need to take additional measures" to be "reasonably self-sufficient" through better medical care and protocols.

A Luxury Cruise Ship, Stuck Off Greenland’s Coast for 3 Days, Is Pulled Free

But thousands more are trapped on ships outside the U.S., including in Uruguay and the Manila Bay, where 16 cruise ships are waiting to test about 5,000 crew members before they will be allowed to disembark. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last month that about 80,000 crew members remained on board ships off the U.S. coast after most passengers had disembarked. The Coast Guard said Friday that there were still 70,000 crew members in 102 ships either anchored near or at U.S. ports or underway in U.S. waters. On March 13, the Cruise Lines International Association, which has over 50 members, announced ocean-going cruise lines would temporarily suspend operations from U.S. ports of call for 30 days as U.S. officials address the coronavirus outbreak. The Joint Arctic Command has also told another cruise ship in the vicinity of the Ocean Explorer to stay in the area in case the situation escalates. A Danish naval ship already at sea off the coast of southwest Greenland has been diverted and should reach the area by Friday morning.

The advisory, the agency’s highest coronavirus warning, came in response to a surge in cases in recent weeks, caused by the spread of the contagious Omicron variant. A Norwegian cruise ship with over 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew on board was given permission to dock in Mauritius on Tuesday after being denied permission over fears of a potential cholera outbreak on board. At least 15 people on the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn were isolated and samples were taken for testing on Sunday, according to a statement from the Port of Mauritius.

Watch: Stowaways survive 14 days at sea clinging to a ship rudder

The elderly passenger who was concussed was returned to the US, where she has made a "safe return," a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said. The Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement provided to BI by email that eight guests on the tour missed the last tender back to the vessel. The Campbells told the news outlet that the ninth passenger was late for another reason — an 80-year-old woman who got a concussion on the island and was hospitalized there. The Ocean Explorer had been traveling toward Northeast Greenland National Park when it ran aground on Monday, officials said. Even before the extension of this sailing was formally announced, Disney Cruise Line canceled the upcoming Disney Wish sailing that was set to depart Port Canaveral on Friday, Sept. 30, as a safety precaution.

cruise ships stuck

The extended sailings are just the latest in a string of disruptions to cruises this week due to Hurricane Nicole. More than half a dozen cruise ships operating in the Caribbean and the Bahamas have had to switch course in recent days to steer clear of the storm as it barreled toward Florida. In many cases, the ships dropped or switched ports as they moved to calmer waters.

Card Issuer

"The weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecasted," the statement continues. The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port nine hours later than planned after sailing through a terrifying storm on Friday night. Dozens of cruise ships sail along Greenland's coast every year so passengers can admire the picturesque mountainous landscape, sometimes barren, with fjords, and the waterways packed with icebergs of different sizes and glaciers jutting out into the sea. The extensions have mostly been met with good humor by passengers on the ships, at least judging from their posts on social media. "Oh noooo hurricane Ian is forcing us to stay on our cruise an extra day," one cruiser on a Royal Caribbean ship wrote early Wednesday on Twitter, adding a laughing emoji that suggested she wasn't upset at all. On Tuesday as Hurricane Ian bore down the west coast of Florida, and Port Canaveral closed to marine traffic at 12 a.m.

cruise ships stuck

That's currently the situation for Carnival Paradise, Carnival Elation, Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas, Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Getaway, MSC Cruise's MSC Divina and Disney Wish. With several Florida ports closed due to the storm, the ships cannot return to disembark passengers on schedule. Without the option to return to Florida as originally scheduled, Disney Wish — along with other cruise ships — is (temporarily) "stuck" at sea. There's always a possibility of bad weather and rough seas when you go on a cruise, but cruise lines are well prepared to change course if an approaching storm could be too dangerous to navigate. Even if the Dali wasn’t being restocked daily, they’d likely have more than enough resources to survive an extended stay on the boat. The New York Times reported soon after the initial collision that the Dali was only a mere 30 minutes into a 27-day voyage before the ship lost power and collided with the bridge, killing six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time.

For Disney Wish, a port change announcement came on the morning of Sept. 28 when the ship was scheduled to dock at Castaway Cay for the day. Rather than head toward Disney's private island, and toward the storm, the ship turned toward the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean where seas would be calmer. When Disney Wish set sail on Sept. 26, the captain made an announcement that the ship might return to Port Canaveral later in the day than originally planned based on the projected forecast at that time.

The weather is certainly one of those reasons — even absent a full-fledged hurricane. But when a hurricane is churning, it is very possible that the ship's itinerary will change. Carnival Paradise "is now scheduled to depart from Cozumel on Wednesday," Carnival said in the statement. "The ship will then begin heading back to Tampa, but remaining a safe distance from the storm as the company determines when Carnival Paradise can return to the Port of Tampa after the U.S. Coast Guard assesses conditions." The Antarctic cruise set sail from Argentina on March 15, after a pandemic had already been declared.

Based on updated forecasts, the captain announced the ship would not return to port until Saturday or Sunday, after the storm had passed and they could better assess the situation at Port Canaveral. That meant passengers would remain on board one or two days longer than expected. While staying at sea and away from the storm is the safest decision, travelers still have a lot of questions, concerns and general curiosity about the change of course. The Points Guy spoke with passengers currently on board Disney Wish to learn what it's like being out at sea for a few extra days during a hurricane. Also likely to remain at sea longer than expected is Disney Cruise Line's 2,508-passenger, Port Canaveral-based Disney Wish.

Holland America late Tuesday said its 2,668-passenger Rotterdam and 2,104-passenger Eurodam would remain at sea on Wednesday instead of returning to Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades as scheduled, in order to stay well clear of Tropical Storm Nicole. Because Disney Wish employs a rotational dining schedule, in which passengers are assigned nights at each of the ship's main restaurants, guests must now wait to be told which restaurants they should dine in on the additional nights of the sailing. "Since Disney Cruise Line uses rotational dining, they simply assigned us two more nights of a restaurant. It's really operating like normal in many ways," Meeks said.

Roseboom, who resides in Central Florida, is enjoying the extra day or two of vacation, but is equally worried about his house and friends and family back home in the wake of Hurricane Ian. "For cruisers who live outside of Florida, they seem to be mostly happy, but they do have to figure out how to change their flights," he shared. In a subsequent announcement on the afternoon of Sept. 28, the captain updated guests that Disney Wish would return to Port Canaveral on Sunday instead of Friday and that the ship should be able to dock at Castaway Cay on Saturday, Oct. 1. Earlier Thursday, Australia-based Aurora Expeditions which has chartered the ship, said that three passengers had COVID-19.

Norwegian Cruise Line canceled its Caribbean trip mid voyage due to Covid-19, leaving travelers stuck at sea until the ship returns to New York. What's particularly notable about this week's cruise extensions is that they are taking place for ships operating out of multiple Florida ports on both sides of the state — a result of Hurricane Ian's large size and Florida-crossing track. Under the agreement, MSC Cruises will also provide food and health care for the impacted Bolivians and immigration officials will work to resolve the passengers’ visa problems as quickly as possible, it added. Earlier this week in Nassau, Bahamas, crew members from Canada aboard the Emerald Princess were told to prepare to be flown home in a charter plane. Under the agreement, MSC Cruises will also provide food and health care for the impacted Bolivians and immigration officials will work to resolve the passengers' visa problems as quickly as possible, it added. Barcelona was meant to be the final destination for the Bolivian passengers, but the boat was scheduled to travel onward to other countries.

"With the safety of our guests and crew an utmost priority, Eurodam and Rotterdam will stay at sea an extra day due to Tropical Storm Nicole," Holland America said in a statement sent to TPG. As is customary when cruises need to be extended due to inclement weather, none of the passengers on board the vessels will be charged for the extra days they spend on the ships. Days after the collision, media reported that the crew of the ship—consisting of 20 Indian nationals and one member from Sri Lanka—remained aboard the ship and were all safe.

Unveil the Secrets: Mastering Toner Application Time for Flawless Hair

Unveil the Secrets: Mastering Toner Application Time for Flawless Hair

Toner is a semi-permanent hair color that is used to change the tone of your hair. It can be used to correct brassiness, add warmth, or create a completely new look. Toner is typically applied to bleached or highlighted hair, but it can also be used on natural hair.

The length of time you leave toner on your hair will depend on the type of toner you are using and the desired results. In general, you should leave toner on for no longer than 30 minutes. If you leave toner on for too long, it can damage your hair and cause it to become dry and brittle.

Unlock the Truth: Is Laser Hair Removal Worth the Investment?

Unlock the Truth: Is Laser Hair Removal Worth the Investment?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser to remove unwanted hair. It is a popular method of hair removal because it is relatively permanent, and it can be used on any part of the body. The cost of laser hair removal varies depending on the size of the area being treated and the number of treatments required. However, many people find that the cost is worth it because of the long-lasting results.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment, which causes the follicle to heat up and destroy. This damage prevents the follicle from producing new hair. Laser hair removal is most effective on dark, coarse hair. It is less effective on light, fine hair.
